8000 police officers to provide security for May Day rallies in Sri Lanka

Apr 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka police will deploy 8000 police officers to ensure security for the May Day rallies to be held in Colombo and other places.

In addition, the Army and the police Special Task Force (STF) will also be deployed for the security, the Inspector General of Police announced.

Eleven May Day rallies are to be held in Colombo. They include the massive rally of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance and Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna’s rally at the BRC grounds.

Major opposition United National Party is to hold its May Day rally at Bandarawela in the hill country.

Ruling coalition partner Ceylon Workers’ Congress that represents estate laborers will also hold three May Day rallies at Nuwara Eliya, Agarapathana and Talawakelle in the hill country.
