A code of conduct for Sri Lanka opposition party members

Jan 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka main opposition United National Party (UNP) has approved a code of conduct for the party members to follow at yesterday’s Working Committee meeting.

It has been agreed that members could not organize meetings at national, district or electoral levels without approval from the party.

A disciplinary committee headed by President’s Counsel Thilak Marapone has also been appointed to ensure that the code of ethics was followed.

The Working Committee has unanimously decided to grant party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe the power to initiate disciplinary action against any party members if he/she has violated the code of conduct.

Wickremasinghe has also been given the power by the Working Committee to decide on the date to hold the party convention.

The Working Committee has also watched a documentary film that had been prepared on the attack on the party headquarters, Sirikotha by party members last month.

The Working Committee had then passed a resolution condemning the attack on the party headquarters.

The Committee has also approved a proposal that the appointment of office bearers with a consensus or through an election was done properly and that the election for office bearers was carried out in a fair manner.
