Agreement to be signed to set up a canned fish factory in Sri Lanka

July 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Aquatic Resources Rajitha Senaratne says that the agreement to set up a canned fish manufacturing plant will be signed tomorrow.

The factory to be set up in Galle early next month is expected to produce 25,000 cans of fish per day. The Minister said that the production will be increased to 70,000 cans per day in the second stage of the project.

It is one of the two factories expected to be set up in Sri Lanka. Minister Senaratne says that they will save a massive foreign expenditure that flows out of the country for canned fish and also will be able to provide a high quality product while providing employment for the local youth.

The factories are to be set up as public-private partnerships. Two private companies are to join the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in this investment.

A New Zealand Company, Spirit Wind has agreed to invest Rs. 5 billion to set up the factory in

Galle.
