Jan 24 2015, Colombo: Ajith Dias an apparel industry expert and a leading Sri Lankan businessman, has been appointed to head Sri Lanka’s national carrier SriLankan Airlines, sources said.
Ajith Dias was the Chairman of the Joint Apparel Associations Forum (JAAF) which is the apex body of all Textile and Apparel Associations before being appointed to head the national carrier.
Dias has served as a Director of Brandix, Sri Lanka’s biggest exporter, and was the former Chairman of the Free Trade Zone Manufacturers Association (FTZMA).
He replaces Nishantha Wickramasinghe, the brother of former First Lady and former President’s brother-in-law.
Wickramasinghe had come under severe criticism for the heavy financial losses the national carrier incurred during his tenure. The airline has been incurring losses since 2008 and made a loss of 28.6 billion rupees in 2013.
