Allegations of rock blocking access to Sri Lanka’s Hambanthota harbor likely to be debated next month

Apr 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka Deputy Minister of Ports and Transport Rohitha Abeygunawardana says he is ready to debate at the beginning of the next month with the opposition MP who has been spreading distorted news regarding the newly built Hambanthota harbor.

He challenged the opposition United National Party (UNP) MP Harin Fernando to come to the debate without hesitating.

MP Harin Fernando said at a UNP press conference last week that the harbor is inaccessible to ships since a large rock bed, which had not been removed during dredging, blocks the movements of ships.

Some media reports said the Lloyd`s of London, the British insurance and reinsurance company has rejected maritime insurance related to Hambantota harbour.

The Deputy Minister vehemently denied the allegation and challenged the UNP MP for a debate. MP Fernando told media he was ready for the debate.
