Another dispute within Sri Lanka’s major opposition party over Kandy mayoral candidate

Aug 31, Colombo: A group of candidates of Sri Lanka’s major opposition United National Party (UNP) for Kandy Municipal Council have planned to make a request from the party leadership to change the decision of naming Neranjan Wijerathna as the mayoral candidate for the Kandy MC at the upcoming election.

Wijerathna, the former Chief Administrator (Diyawadana Nilame) of the sacred Temple of Tooth was named as the Mayor candidate of Kandy Municipal Council despite that several other veteran councilors were in the list.

They include former Mayors Kesara Senanayaka and Raja Pushpakumara.

The rebel candidates point out that Wijerathna lost the Central Provincial Council election also and resigned from the electoral organizer post of Galagedara last year.
