Attackers of Sri Lanka popular actress and ruling party member arrested

Aug 11, Elpitiya: Sri Lanka police have arrested the two men suspected of attacking Sri Lanka’s popular actress and ruling party member Geetha Kumarasinghe yesterday in Elpitiya, her home-town in Southern Sri Lanka.

Ms, Kumarasinghe was attending a funeral at Elpitiya when two men, allegedly drunk attempted to stab the star, the police said.

The residents of the house where the funeral was at rushed to her aid and rescued her from the attackers, according local media reports.

The police arrived at the scene have arrested the two drunken suspects with the knife in their possession.

President Rajapaksa last year appointed Geetha Kumarasinghe as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) organizer for Benthara and Elpitiya.

She contested the April 2010 general elections from Galle district but failed to secure a win.

The police are continuing further investigations.
