British Defence Secretary to visit Sri Lanka

July 06, Colombo: The Secretary of State for Defence of the United Kingdom and British Conservative Party parliamentarian Dr. Liam Fox will visit Sri Lanka this week, diplomatic source have said.

Dr. Fox is to deliver the Lakshman Kadirgamar commemoration lecture on July 09, sources say.

He postponed an earlier visit to Sri Lanka last year to deliver the Lakshman Kadirgamar memorial lecture scheduled on December 18 at the invitation by the widow of the late Sri Lankan Foreign Minister who was gunned down by the LTTE in 2005.

Dr. Fox attributed the cancellation to an extension to his scheduled official visit to the Gulf at the time.

However, the media reports said the postponement of Dr. Fox’s private visit was due to pressure from the UK government in the wake of the debacle with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit to UK last year.
