May 25, Beijing: China on Tuesday (24) said it believes the Sri Lankan government and its people are capable of resolving their own issues and it supports the government’s efforts towards reconciliation.
Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi assured the visiting Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris that China will continue to support Sri Lanka politically and economically indicating China’s backing to safeguard the country’s independence against international pressures.
The two foreign ministers discussed the bilateral ties during their meeting and Minister Peiris appreciated China’s support for providing assistance for Sri Lanka’s economic and social development and supporting the country’s efforts in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Commenting on the progress Sir Lanka has made in economic and social reconstruction work since achieving peace in 2009,Chinese Foreign Minister Yang has that his country attaches great importance to developing the comprehensive cooperative partnership with Sri Lanka.
Yang has said that China believes the Sri Lankan government and people have the capacity to achieve national reconciliation, social stability, and economic prosperity, official Xinhua news agency reported.
Peiris has said that Sri Lanka and China have always maintained mutual understanding and support since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 54years ago.
Sri Lanka has sought China’s backing to counter the allegations of war crimes leveled against the country by the report from the Panel of Experts appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General to probe Sri Lanka’s accountability during the later stages of the war.
Sri Lankan Minister’s visit to Beijing followed his visit to New Delhi last week seeking the Indian government’s support to defend the government’s own efforts in post-war reconciliation.
