CID arrests 25 over attack on Sri Lanka police station

Oct 09, Dompe: The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Sri Lanka has arrested 25 individuals who attacked a police station in the Western Province following the death of a suspect under police custody.

Residents of Dompe, a town about 35 miles east of Colombo, attacked the town’s police station and damaged the property after the mysterious death of Gayan Saranga (28) while under police custody last month.

The police said the suspect jumped out of a moving vehicle during an escape attempt on September 30 and got severely injured. The suspect later succumbed to his injuries.

The residents incensed by the death have attacked the police and set fire to police vehicles.

The elite police Special Task Force (STF) police was deployed to maintain the law and order.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Illangakoon handed over the investigation into the incident to the CID.

The CID conducting investigations on the young man’s suspicious death arrested the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of Crimes, a sub-inspector (SI), a Police Sergeant and two Police Constables of the police station.

Several suspects have been killed in Sri Lanka while under police custody. The police generally claim the deaths occur during escape attempts.
