Colombo MC Chief Medical Officer proposes a fine for spitting in public places to control TB

Dec 28, Colombo: Chief Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam proposes the imposition of a fine on persons found spitting in public areas.

Dr. Kariyawasam has said the move is aimed at preventing tuberculosis from spreading in the Colombo City.

Statistics with the CMC has revealed an increase in the number of tuberculosis cases reported from the city.

The CMC Chief Medical Officer has said that 740 cases of tuberculosis have been reported from Colombo this year, which is an increase.

Dr. Kariyawasam has added that the highest number of tuberculosis patients have been reported from Colombo.

A fine had been imposed on persons spitting in public places in Colombo in 1914 to control tuberculosis.
