Condé Nast Traveller picks Sri Lanka as a destination for 2012

Dec 31, Colombo: The award-winning international travel magazine Cond Nast Traveller in its December 2011 features Sri Lanka as one of the hottest new holiday destinations for 2012.

The internationally acclaimed monthly travel magazine predicting the travel destinations set to be big over the coming year recommends Sri Lanka, which has been off-limit to tourists for political reasons until recently, as a destination to watch.

The magazine says now the country is free of the Tamil Tiger terrorists and for the first time in a long time travellers are being encouraged to return.

The travel experts of the Conde Nast Traveller say the beaches in the north and east are undeveloped and their natural beauty unspoiled as a consequence of the occupation of those areas by the Tigers.

“You can find yourself the only tourist in the traditional villages, and the only person on some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Indeed, those beaches on the east coast have fine sand and calm, clear waters, unlike the surf destinations on the west,” the magazine describes.

The travellers are informed that “top-class accommodation is still limited,” but pointed out that for many, “finding charming guesthouses or rustic beach huts is all part of the adventure; and being first to discover a place never loses its thrill.”

The magazine says there are few options, mainly around Trincomalee which was once a popular tourist destination and is now being re-established, especially, in Pigeon Island, a nature reserve, a new resort has smart rooms and a pool right on the beach.
