Aug 27, Colombo: Another crisis is being brewing in Sri Lanka’s major opposition United National Party over the mayoral candidate position for Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council at the upcoming local government elections.
UNP Colombo District legislator Mohan Lal Grero has warned of severe action if the party leadership fails to address his request to keep the position of mayoral candidate for the Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council open until the end of the election.
However, the party has nominated the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe loyalist, current mayor Mrs. Sunethra Ranasinghe as the candidate to lead Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council.
The UNP General Secretary parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake has meanwhile said that the mayoral candidate for the Council was named following discussions in the UNP’s national nominations board, although a request had been received to not name anyone and keep the position open.
Attanayake has told local TV Ada Derana that the party decided to name Mrs. Ranasinghe as the candidate after carefully considering all the all facts and information.
Grero says that he would give time for the party leadership till Tuesday (30) to respond positively to his request and he is ready to make sacrifices if the party leadership fails to address the issue.
Attanayake, however, has expressed hope that certain settlement can be reached through further discussions and insisted the fight should be not for the post but for the party to win the elections.
Party sources say the pro-reformist group of the UNP is frustrated that the party leadership is choosing candidates loyal to the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
The party nominated A.J.M. Muzammil, another Wickremasinghe loyalist as the mayoral candidate for Colombo Municipal Council.
