Demonstration organized in Jaffna against two missing activists of Sri Lanka’s dissident Marxist group

Jan 16, Colombo: The dissidents of Sri Lanka’s Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) have organized a demonstration to be held in Jaffna tomorrow against the disappearance of two dissident members.

JVP dissident members Lalith Kumar Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganathan went missing on December 9, 2011 while making preparation to launch the Movement for People’s Struggle formed by the JVP dissidents in Jaffna.

The two persons were reportedly abducted by a group of unidentified persons.

Convener of the We Are Sri Lankan organizer and JVP dissident, Udul Premaratne says that hundreds of persons would travel to Jaffna today from the South to participate in the demonstration.

He said that members of other political groups as well as human rights activists would participate in tomorrow’s demonstration.

A leaflet distribution campaign is to also be held in Jaffna following the demonstration.

According to Premaratne, authorities have failed to provide any information about Lalith Kumar’s and Kugan’s whereabouts.

Complaints about the two missing persons have been lodged with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka and the United Nations.
