Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka opposition calls for government intervention to solve university student issues

Jan 08, Colombo: The Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) has called for the government to intervene in finding a solution to the student issues at the Sri Jayewardenepura University.

The Deputy Leader has pointed out that the entire education system in the country has fallen apart at present with the mess in the national exam results and student unrests at the universities.

‎”Before the issue of the Advanced Level examination results is resolved, the attempt to put university students on the streets by threatening their security is an arbitrary act of the Government,” Premadasa has said.

“No one who respects democracy would approve the act of dragging students to the streets, while destroying the hopes and expectations of the parents who are committed towards the education of their children,” the Deputy Leader has noted.

Administrators of the Sri Jayewardenepura University yesterday closed all faculties except the Medical Faculty indefinitely due to the student unrest.
