Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka’s major opposition contradicts views of his supporters regarding election

Jan 29, Colombo: Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka’s major opposition United National Party (UNP) Sajith Premadasa has admitted that the party’s Working Committee election held in December for top party positions had been conducted in a fair manner.

In an interview with Sunday Sinhala newspaper The Divaina, he praised UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake for ensuring the election held in a fair manner.

Premadasa noted that the only issue related to the election was the ballot papers did not carry a number like in other major elections.

Had that matter been sorted out, no one would have been able to complain, Premadasa has said contradicting some party activists loyal to him like MP Dayasiri Jayasekara.

Karu Jayasuriya the candidate fielded by Sajith Premadasa faction to compete with incumbent leader Ranil Wickremasinghe lost whilst Sajith Premadasa secured a comfortable victory in the position of party Deputy leader at the Working Committee election.
