Dissident member of Sri Lanka main opposition party to file case against the election of office bearers

Jan 08, Colombo: Southern Provincial Councilor of Sri Lanka main opposition United National Party (UNP), Maithri Gunaratne is to file a case against the election of office bearers of the party.

He said that the way the working committee election was held and the office bearers were elected violated the party constitution and he would file the case in the next week.

Gunaratne, a party dissident, was recently arrested and released on bail for vandalizing party property of UNP headquarters on the day of the working committee election.

A spokesman loyal to the UNP leadership argued that the changes in the UNP constitution to give way for annual elections to elect the leadership were made on the request of the dissidents.

He pointed out that all the candidates sans party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe appointed representatives to monitor the election and no candidate complained regarding irregularities.
