Dissidents accuse Sri Lanka Marxist party of strengthening capitalist governments

Nov 07, Colombo: A key member of the Sri Lanka Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna dissident group Senadheera Gunathileka alias Opatha says that Rohana Wijeweera had not founded the JVP to strengthen the capitalist governments and dissolve the left.

He noted that the left, strengthened by Wijeweera, had been used to strengthen the government of Chandrika Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa, thereby moving the left movement towards capitalism.

Speaking at a seminar on Wijeweera’s policies, Gunathileka said that Wijeweera would also have been powerful had he aligned himself with the SLFP, but he did not do so and although the battle had failed, the politics used for the battle had come a long way.

He noted that JVP was the school where socialism was being established.

He explained that the left movement has moved towards the right and that it was evident with political incidents that have taken place in the decade that followed the year 2000.

According to Gunathileka, there is no battle to claim ownership to Wijeweera’s legacy, but a need to raise the policies introduced by him to the suppressed sections of society.
