Extortion racket at Colombo JMO office over dead bodies

Feb 09, Colombo: Health Services Director General of Sri Lanka, Dr. Ajith Mendis has been informed of an extortion racket carried out by a group of employees at the office of Colombo Judicial Medical Officer (JMO).

Colombo JMO, Dr. Ananda Samarasekera has in writing informed Dr. Mendis of an extortion racket by an organized group of employees at the JMO office collecting monies from the guardians of dead bodies.

Dr. Samarasekera has said that this group of employees has collected between Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 15,000 from relatives to release a dead body.

Dr. Samarasekera has condemned the racket and called for an immediate inquiry into the matter. He has pledged his support to an impartial inquiry.
