Fisheries Ministry to fight malnutrition

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry in
collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO) will reduce malnutrition from Sri Lanka,
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr.Rajitha
Senaratne said.

Reports show that fish consumption has increased in Sri Lanka. The
fisheries industry has to play a major role to reduce malnutrition in
Sri Lanka, he added.

The minister was speaking at a function held at the National
Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) where appointment letters were
handed over to newly recruited aquaculture scientists and aquaculture
project officers.

About 17 graduates received their appointment letters, and 11 were
recruited as aquaculture scientists and the balance six as project
officers. “We hope to develop the fisheries industry with the assistance
of officials engaged in the fisheries industry.

NAQDA Chairman Jayantha Chandrasoma,Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
Development Ministry’s Additional Secretary Shantha Bandara and
officials also participated.
