Jan 09, Colombo: Former President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa after conceding his defeat at the presidential election has returned to his ancestral home at Medamulana in Hambantota district.
Before vacating the President’s House in Colombo, Rajapaksa thanked his staff and those who supported him and urged the public to accept the change peacefully.
His Spokesman Wijayananda Herath said the President Rajapaksa was accepting the people’s verdict.
The outgoing president received wide commendation from public as well as from civil society leaders for handing over power smoothly and promptly to the new President.
The former President fearing that his popularity is waning took a gamble and called a presidential election in a bid for a third term with two more years left in his second term.
