May 26, Colombo: The government of Sri Lanka has decided to declare two areas in the Southern coast as High Security Zones (HSZs) to protect the coral reefs in the area.
Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshamn Yapa Abeywardena has told media that the government has decided to declare Unawatunna and Hikkduwa coastal areas as HSZs.
The declaration that is to be gazetted on June 6th would prevent operating boats and water scooters in the Unawatunna and Hikkaduwa areas.
The move is expected to help save the coral reefs in the Southern coast.
According to the Minister, a separate area is to be designated for boats and water scooters in the sea.
