Grease Devil fear claims policeman’s life in Northwestern Sri Lanka

Aug 21, Puttalam: Tension is gripping the coastal town of Puttalam in Northwestern Sri Lanka Sunday as residents of the town clashed with the Puttlam police after the presence of a Grease Devil was reported in the area.

Local media reports said a policeman severely assaulted by the villagers during the clash died on admission to the hospital.

Five people, including a woman and a 13-year-old child have been injured in a shootout, the police say, carried out by unidentified gunmen on a motor bicycle.

Irate residents have taken to the streets after the reports of a Grease Devil in the area and set fire to a motorbike, local media reports said.

Panic-stricken people in rural areas of Sri Lanka are taking law onto their own hands and attacking visitors to the locales and also law enforcement officers. In some areas the authorities had to seek the assistance of Army to calm the tensions.
