Aug 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s false Grease Devil fear psychosis that has been wreaking havoc in the rural areas has now spread to the capital Colombo and the North as well.
A heated situation erupted in Colombo Hultsdorf area where the Supreme Court and other courts are located as rumors spread of suspicious elements.
Later, officials from several police stations were called to calm the situation.
Police media spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said that the spread of rumors and the fear psychosis that has no roots caused the situation.
Yesterday, two civil-clothed police officers of a police station in Vavuniya area were also beaten by villagers after rumors of two Grease Devils had entered the village.
The seriously injured policemen are being treated at the Vavuniya Hospital now and police had arrested 9 villagers in connection with the incident. Several villagers also were injured and hospitalized later as a result of the clash.
The villagers in Kalpitiya area had attacked a police officer who was on duty at a GCE Advanced Level examination center and damaged the Kalpitiya Hospital property when the officer was treated at the hospital. Following the unruly attack on the hospital, the doctors have stopped working at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Colombo Magistrate Court ordered to remand a three-wheeler driver for spreading false rumors on Grease Devil phenomenon in Modera area.
The suspect has claimed that the government is behind the Grease Devil attacks.
Earlier the Grease Devil incidents were mostly concentrated in the East. Several incidents of villagers attacking innocent people and law enforcement officers including army soldiers have been reported in several districts of the country.
Rumors have erupted saying that the government is behind the attacks to keep the Emergency Regulations in force in the country.
Law enforcement authorities meanwhile blame remnants of terrorists and pro-LTTE elements for causing mayhem to disrupt government’s development programs in the war-battered region.
