Gunfire, clashes reported from Sri Lanka’s main prison in Colombo

Jan 24, Colombo: Reports from Sri Lanka’s main Welikada Prison in Colombo say clashes have erupted between inmates and prison guards and a tense situation is prevailing.

Reportedly several inmates have staged a protest against a new prison officer and a clash has ensued between the inmates and prison officials. Several inmates have been injured by gunfire, the officials have said.

The Government Information Department reported that fire brigade has deployed fire trucks to the Welikada Prison to douse a fire at the premises.

Minister of Prison Reforms, Chandrasiri Gajadeera has been informed of the incident and he has sent a group of officials including the Commissioner General of Prisons to the Welikada Prison.

Local media reports said 21 persons have been injured in the melee and they have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

Meanwhile, Commissioner General of Prisons, P.W. Kodippili has told Ada Derana that the tense situation that had prevailed at the prison was completely brought under control.

The incident at the Welikada Prison comes a day after three prisoners from Galle Prison staged an escape attempt by assaulting a prison guard early Monday morning. Five people were injured in yesterday’s incident.
