Hambanthota beach garden developed for South Asian Beach Sports Festival

June 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka Hambanthota District parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa says that the Hambanthota beach garden is being developed fast to hold the first ever South Asian Beach Sports Festival in October.

The South Asian Beach Sports Festival is to be held at the Arugam Bay Beach in the Eastern Province and the Hambanthota Beach in the Southern Province.

An area of 16 acres connecting the Hambanthota beach near the city bus stand in the town has been allocated for this festival. Sports Pavilions and Four Training Centers will be constructed in this land area.

A vast number of beach sports including volleyball, football, handball, swimming, netball, beach cricket, sailing, windsurfing, kabaddi, basketball and body building will be played at the festival.

Volley ball for men and women will be played at the beaches of Hambanthota, Tangalle, and Tissamaharama. Eight sports ground for the events like badminton, Kabadi, Netball are being constructed.

South Asian Beach Sports Fund handles the construction according to the planning by the Urban Development Authority.

Authorities expect nearly 1,000 athletes and other sports personnel representing SAARC countries to participate in this festival.
