In Pictures: Sri Lanka President participates in Vesak celebrations

May 16, Kelaniya: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today participated in several religious activities to commemorate the 2600th Sambuddathwa Jayanthi anniversary in parallel with the Vesak celebrations.

The President Mahinda Rajapaksa accompanied by Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe paid homage to the ancient Kelaniya Sri Raja Maha Viharaya today and opened a newly constructed rock stair case amidst the blessings of the Maha Sangha.


Seen here is the President lighting coconut oil lamps at the Kelani Temple Bo Tree with the Opposition Leader.


Chief incumbent of Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkitha Thera, Minister Mervyn Silva, and opposition MP Ravi Karunanayaka also participated.

President Rajapaksa also participated in the Seela programme of 2600 youth today at Maharagama Youth Service Council.


The President is pictured here offering “Pirikara” to Ven. Aludeniye Subodha Thera of Maha Meuna Uyana Asapuwa who administered the programme.

Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, Chairman of the “Future for the Youth” organization, MP Namal Rajapaksa and the Chairman of the Youth Service Council, Lalith Piyum Perera also participated in the event.

President Rajapaksa opened the newly constructed parapet wall at Bogamuwa Sri Poorwarama Viharaya in Aluthgama today.


Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and some other politicians also participated in the event.
