Inaugural Ironman 70.3 and 5150 Series in Sri Lanka held tomorrow

Feb 18, Colombo: On Sunday Sri Lanka will host its first ever Ironman triathlon race in the capital Colombo with the participation of over 700 international and local athletes.

Capital Colombo tomorrow will host Sri Lanka’s first Ironman 70.3 and the first ever 5150 Series to be held in Asia, offering qualifying slots for the Ironman World Championship 70.3 and 5150 Series Championship.

According to the organizers, the event will become part of the Ironman 70.3 Series that includes over 40 races worldwide and the 15-race 5150 Triathlon Series.

The races are staged from the Galle Face Green in the backdrop of the Indian Ocean and downtown Colombo. All roads in Colombo will be closed on the race day. Over 700 participants from 35 countries are estimated to attend the inaugural event.

2011 Ironman European Champion, Faris Al-Sultan is expected to participate in tomorrow’s event, the organizers say.

The Ironman 70.3 event will feature a 1.9 kilometer swim in the Indian Ocean off Gall Face green, followed by a three-lap 90 kilometer bike and finish with a two-lap 21 kilometer, run.

The 5150 Triathlon will feature a 1.5 kilometer swim, followed by a one-lap 40 kilometer bike and finishing with a 10 kilometer run.

The professional men and women’s fields in Sri Lanka will be competing for $15,000 and 500 Pro Ranking points to go towards qualifying for the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 World Championships. There are 25 age group spots available for the Ironman World Championship 70.3, held at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada, on September 9, 2012.
