Injunction sought against the general assembly of the Sri Lanka Marxists

Dec 28, Colombo: The Colombo District Court yesterday summoned the Central Committee of the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) to show cause on the special convention of the party scheduled to be held on January 01 at Debaraweva, Hambantota.

Accordingly, 22 members of the Central Committee including the party leader Somawansa Amarasinghe and the dissidents have been summoned to show cause on January 30.

Colombo district judge S.Y. Mapa Bandara issued this summon after considering two petitions filed by two Central Committee members of the JVP, parliamentarian G.M. Ajith Kumara and G. Kularathna.

The petitioners have cited that the party general assembly scheduled to be held on January 01 is illegal and sought an injunction against it.

The Election Commissioner also has been named a defendant of the petition. The petitioners say that a list of eligible members to vote at the party convention has been sent to the Election Commissioner by party General Secretary and they have not been summoned to the convention.
