International trade fair opens in Sri Lanka’s Northern city of Jaffna

Jan 20, Jaffna: The annual Jaffna International Trade Fair (JITF) opened Friday for the 3rd consecutive year at the Alfred Durayappah Stadium in Jaffna showcasing over 200 companies both local and international, exhibiting in over 300 stalls.

The event, to be concluded on January 22, is organized by Lanka Exhibition and Conference Services (Pvt) Ltd. in association with the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Jaffna supported by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau.

The three-day fair aims to help various industries to establish their businesses in the peninsula which had long been set aside as too risky for investments due to the three-decade long war that ravaged the region.

The trade fair is expected to attract more than 60,000 visitors including traders from India. The last year’s trade fair drew over 30,000 visitors.

“The trade fair will encompass all segments and industries that have direct bearing upon the people of the northern most tip of the country, giving the northerners an opportunity to participate and witness the most innovative methods, technologies and industries which a rapidly growing in the 21st century,” the organizers say.

The industries featuring in the third JITF include tourism and hospitality, construction, food, beverages and packing, agriculture, fisheries, Information and communication technology, apparel, automobile, financial services and consumer goods.
