Japanese envoy Yasushi Akashi to arrive in Sri Lanka today

Nov 25, Colombo: Special envoy for Sri Lanka of the government of Japan Yasushi Akashi will arrive in Sri Lanka today on three days official tour of the Island.

He has been invited by the government of Sri Lanka to be the guest of honor at the opening ceremony of the country’s first expressway Colombo to Galle – which was assisted by The Government of Japan.

Akashi has planned to have discussions with the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, senior government leaders and also with opposition political parties.

Akashi was actively involved in mediating between the government and the Tamil Tigers during ceasefire before the Tamil Tigers were defeated militarily in 2009. As peace envoy he visited the country several times and even after the war he visited Sri Lanka to push for reconciliation.
