Marxist student organization of Sri Lanka asks government to remove military from the North

Feb 07, Colombo: The ‘We Are Sri Lankans’ organization affiliated to the dissidents group of Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has called on the government to remove the military presence from the North.

Executive Committee members of the organization and JVP dissident, Udul Premaratne says military presence in the North has restricted the people from moving freely in their areas.

Premaratne’s comments come soon after Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa stated that the North was not being militarized.

He has observed that murders and suicides have seen an increase in the North allegedly due to the heavy military presence.

Premaratne says that there are 50,000 military personnel and 5,000 police officers assigned to the North where there is a population of 650,000 people.

According to Premaratne, despite claims made by the government that the military presence would not affect the normalcy in the North, it has had an adverse impact and failed to bring normalcy to areas in the North.
