Monk organization affiliated to Sri Lanka’s main opposition sees government and media conspiracy behind party crisis

Aug 23, Colombo: The monk organization affiliated to Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the current conflict in the party is due to a conspiracy by certain forces within the party and some media organizations.

The United National Bhikku Forum (UNBF) has said the crisis could also be a government conspiracy that is being carried out by the UNP reformists.

Head of the UNBF, Ven. Malabe Seelaratana Thero has said the pro-reforms group could be carrying out a contract by the government to destabilize the party prior to the forthcoming local government elections.

The Thero has criticized deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya saying he should not have got involved in the leadership issue while the party leader was overseas.

He has pointed out that party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe could not be blamed for the electoral defeats the party had suffered over the years.

According to Ven. Seelaratana Thero, all UNP MPs and organizers should take the blame for the party’s defeats at elections.

However, the Thero has said the UNP had managed to increase its voter base in some areas at the last local government election in July.

The Thero has added that the party crisis could also be a conspiracy by the Tamil Diaspora and certain media organizations to destabilize the mentality of the Sinhala leaders.

The pro-reformists of the party say the party leader has made a pact with the government and blames his leadership for the party’s dismal performance at every election held since 2001.
