* More lands released in the Northern Sri Lanka for paddy cultivation

Sept 07, Colombo: The Agriculture Department of Sri Lanka says that an additional 500 hectares of land in the North has been cleared of landmines and being cultivated with paddy.

Agriculture Department office in Vavuniya says that 12,000 hectares were initially cultivated with paddy following the end of the three decade long war in the North.

Paddy is currently being cultivated in Vavuniya, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Jaffna Districts in the North.

The Agriculture Department notes that following the release of the additional 500 hectares for paddy cultivation, the government has taken steps to provide the Northern farmers with the necessary equipment to commence their livelihoods.
