More passenger troubles on Sri Lanka’s Southern Expressway

Jan 10, Galle: The Elpitiya Magistrate Court in Galle District yesterday imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on a passenger who was produced in Court for disembarking from a passenger bus at Kurundugahahethekma interchange, an unauthorized spot, on the Southern Expressway.

The Magistrate warned the passenger in the open court and pointed out that he could be subjected to a fine of Rs. 50,000.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Transport Nirmala Kothalawala said that a special operation is underway to apprehend the culprits who threw stones at passing vehicles on the Expressway on Saturday. In one incident, Southern Provincial Councilor Baddegama Samitha Thero’s vehicle was also damaged.

In a separate incident, the passengers yesterday blamed the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) for deploying a normal bus instead of the luxury bus with seat belts in the newly started passenger bus service on the Expressway. The normal bus, not suitable for high-speed driving, has plied on the Expressway yesterday morning from Galle to Maharagama, passengers said.

Meanwhile, SLTB sources said that two more SLTB luxury buses will be added to the current fleet from today.

A time table has been drawn up to facilitate passenger travel, sources said.
