Oct 21, Colombo: In order to strengthen the district administration to suit the necessity of the government’s development programmes, the Cabinet has given approval to grant more powers to the District Secretaries.
Acting on a proposal presented by the Minister of Public administration and Home Affairs W.D.J. Seneviratne, the Cabinet has approved respective ministries to take necessary measures to revise all relevant regulations and administrative practices in order to appoint District Secretaries as Additional Secretaries of their ministries.
The Under the proposed measure, the District Secretaries will be vested with powers of the ministry secretaries while allowing them to use the designation as Government Agent concurrently.
Accordingly, the government will present the Vesting of Powers (to Divisional Secretaries) Act No 58 of 1992 (Special Provisions) Bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman in Parliament for approval.
