Feb 10, Colombo: A proposal brought by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Environment Anura Priyadarshana Yapa to establish a National Green Reporting System has received the approval of the Cabinet.
Under the proposal a Governing Council with the participation of representatives of government entities responsible for policy guidelines for Sri Lanka Manufacturing and services sectors will be set up, Minister Yapa said today addressing the cabinet media briefing.
Sri Lanka is one of first few countries that have introduced an environmental reporting system. The country has been taking appropriate policy decisions on par with the rest of the world to mitigate adverse effects of industries on environment cropping up due to the rapid growth of industries and development works.
The proposed reporting system aims to facilitate the manufacturing and service sectors, to periodically measure and report their sustainability performance with regard to economic, environmental and social aspects, in order to continually improve their production processes and services, relationship with stakeholders and enhance their image, while contributing towards the sustainable development of the country, the government said.
