New detention center for Sri Lanka’s female prison inmates with children

May 15, Colombo: Speaker of Sri Lanka parliament Chamal Rajapaksa will declare open a detention center tomorrow (16) for the female prison inmates whose children will also be living with their mothers during incarceration.

The women’s and children’s detention center will provide space for 80 detainees.

The center is located away from the prison walls in a beautiful surrounding in the banks of River Kalu of Kalutara, 40 kilometers south of Colombo.

The center was built with the financial assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at a cost of Rs. 5.8 million, a spokesman of the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms said.
