July 31, Colombo: The newly appointed mayors and chairmen of local government bodies won by the ruling party United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) at the recent local polls are to take oaths before the President Monday.
The ruling party won 45 out of the 65 local government bodies that held elections on July 23. Accordingly 92 officials will be sworn in tomorrow.
General Secretary of UPFA Minister Susil Premajayantha has told the state-run radio SLBC that the appointments have been made to the top positions according to the number of preferential votes obtained by the elected officials.
Sri Lanka held elections for 234 of the 335 local authorities in the country on March 17 this year. Of the remaining bodies, 65 local government bodies had polls on July 23. The ruling party had secured 250 of the local government bodies for which the elections were held.
