July 27, Colombo: Demonstrating that democracy has returned to the land once torn by the three decades of terrorism, the recently elected members of Sri Lanka’s major Tamil party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), at the just concluded local government elections in the North are to take oaths in the former rebel stronghold, Kilinochchi.
TNA parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran has said that the candidates who polled the highest preferential votes would be appointed as chairmen of the local government bodies won by the party in the North.
The TNA secured the victory of 18 local government bodies in the North.
Meanwhile, TNA Leader R. Sampanthan has said that the swearing-in ceremony of TNA’s Chairmen, Vice Chairmen and members elected to the local government bodies would be held in Kilinochchi.
The Elections Commissioner is to publish the gazette notification on the list of members elected at last Saturday’s local government elections. The newly elected members will take oaths following the gazette notification.
