News report disrupts banking businesses in Sri Lanka capital yesterday

May 28, Colombo: A controversy erupted in Sri Lanka yesterday as a leading Sinhala language daily posted in its front page that the banks in the Colombo city would be closed Friday due to national victory day celebrations.

The newspaper said that yesterday was a special bank holiday for the banks within the Colombo city limits.

The news created a controversial situation and business was also disrupted due to the false news story, bank sources said.

The newspaper ran an apology in the front page today but insisted that the source of the news was the Ministry of State Administration.

Yesterday was a holiday for the schools and other public offices in the Colombo city due to arrangements for the national victory parade held in the Galle Face Green.
