No 19th Amendment to Sri Lanka Constitution

May 08, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has not taken any decision to introduce a 19th Amendment to the country’s Constitution as some media reported, the Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem has said.

The Minister has firmly denied the recent media reports that, quoting the former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva said the government was planning to introduce the 19th Amendment to the Constitution which would undermine the independence of the Judiciary.

If the government plans to introduce any future amendments to the Constitution, it should be done in a comprehensive manner after an extensive study of the Constitution, not as a piecemeal amendment, the Minister has told the state-run radio Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).

Minister Hakeem has dismissed the former Chief Justice’s statement as a “figment of his imagination”, SLBC reported.
