No more future embarrassment for the babies born in Sri Lanka’s prisons

May 06 2011, Colombo: Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera in Sri Lanka has directed officials to change the policy of mentioning “prison” as the place of birth in the birth certificates of the babies born to female prison inmates.

The Minister has directed officials to change this practice since he has observed that the holders of such birth certificates face embarrassment in their future due to such labeling.

The Minister has advised the officials to mention the place of birth as the area where the prison is situated.

For instance, the place of birth of a baby born in Welikada prison would be Colombo, said an official of the Ministry.
