May 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said that no serious crimes were reported from anywhere in the island on the Vesak full moon day that fell on May 17.
The full moon day marked the 2600th centenary of the enlightenment of Lord Buddha.
The massive crowds that flocked to towns to visit temples, to see decorations and to participate in other Vesak activities mostly behaved peacefully, the police spokesman said.
However, several accidents have been reported, the police spokesman added.
Police have launched a special security programme for the Vesak festival and it will be in effect until May 25, police say.
