Oil leak contaminates water in Sri Lanka’s Castlereagh reservoir

June 08, Colombo: Reports from hill country of Sri Lanka say a flow of furnace oil into the Castlereagh reservoir in Hatton of Nuwara Eliya district has contaminated the water in the reservoir.

Local media reports say an estimated 3000 liters of furnace oil has been dumped from a private tea factory nearby in to the Dikoya stream that flows into the reservoir.

Police say that a private power house near the reservoir has also been damaged due to the oil and the Hatton police are reportedly in the process of taking legal action against the culprits.

The manager of the tea factory is to be produced in court under the environment act. However, the manager has claimed that the flow is a result of a leak in the oil storage.
