Opposition parties of Sri Lanka ask government to reveal its stance on a political settlement

June 16, Colombo: Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the Marxist party of Sri Lanka today said the President’s move to appoint a parliamentary select committee to decide on a political solution to the ethnic issue was a farce and called on the government to first reveal its stance on a political settlement.

JVP Propaganda Secretary, parliamentarian Vijitha Herath told a press conference that the government earlier appointed an All Party Representative Committee (APRC) to determine a political solution that met 128 times for four years without yielding any results.

The party also called on the government to immediately investigate into the Channel 4 documentary to verify the allegations.

Herath said that the telecasting a documentary did not prove if the incidents are true or false.

He said that no international organization or country has the right or the powers to force an investigation upon Sri Lanka.

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian R. Yogarajan accused that the government’s decision to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee to achieve a political solution to the issue is a ploy adopted to overcome international pressure.

He asked the government to come to a solution based on the final report of the APRC appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the APRC reached its conclusions with the deliberations of all the parties including the Sinhala nationalist Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) and the Muslim party, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC).
