* Pension to Sri Lankan farmers not paid for two months, Marxist party claims

Jan 20, Colombo: Parliamentarian of Sri Lanka Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the Agriculture and Agrarian Services Insurance Board has not paid the farmers in the country their pensions for the past two months.

Dissanayake has told parliament that about 100,000 farmers were receiving pension under the farmers’ pension scheme.

He has noted that there were around one million farmers who contribute to the pension fund maintained by the Agriculture and Agrarian Services Insurance Board.

He has added that the farmers have not received their pension payments for November and December last year and there were doubts of receiving the payments for the month of January as well.

According to Dissanayake, the Chairman of the Board has informed that the pension payments have not been paid since the Treasury has failed to allocate the monies for it.

He has noted that the farmers were losing confidence in the pension scheme as a result.
