Perpetrators of Sri Lanka Presidential Advisor’s murder will be punished properly, Defence Secretary vows

Oct 26, Colombo: Rejecting accusations that he is favoring a parliamentarian injured in the election day shootout in Mulleriyawa that killed former MP Baratha Lakshman Premachandra and three others over the deceased, Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has vowed to impose proper punishments to the offenders.

He has strongly rejected the opposition accusations that he is favoring MP Duminda Silva who is the monitoring MP of the Defence Ministry.

The gun battle between supporters of ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) rivals Premachandra and Duminda Silva in Mulleriyawa on October 08 killed Premachandra and three of his supporters. Silva who received severe head injuries during the incident is still being treated at the hospital.

The Defence Secretary has said Premachandra was given the necessary security and the required vehicles while engaging in duties as an advisor to the President.

He has vehemently rejected charges that he provided more security to Silva. The injured MP was given security appropriate for a parliamentarian, Rajapaksa has said.

Silva has been provided with 12 security officers and 3 police officials in the province. He has been given only 2 automatic weapons. None of the Ministry vehicles were provided to Duminda Silva, the Defence Secretary has said.

He has said truth behind this unfortunate incident will be revealed shortly.
