Petition filed in Sri Lankan court seeking cancellation of the Kolonnawa UC election results

Nov 05, Colombo: A petition has been filed before the Colombo High Court in Sri Lanka against the election of Kolonnawa Urban Council.

In the petition filed by former Chairman and current Opposition Leader of the Kolonnawa Urban Council, Chandrasiri Dias has appealed to the court to cancel the election results of the Kolonnawa UC at last month’s local government elections and the appointment of councilors to the Council.

The main respondent in the case is Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya.

The petition has challenged the outcome of the elections, alleging that governing party parliamentarian Duminda Silva has threatened, intimidated and bribed the people including main opposition United National Party (UNP) members in the electorate and has forcibly taken votes of the UNP.

The petition has stated that various corrupt and terror activities had taken place in the electorate since the handing over of nominations.

According to the petition, the Elections Commissioner had also failed to take action against complaints made on the misuse of the state media.

Therefore, the petitioner has sought courts to nullify the results of the Kolonnawa Urban Council elections.
