June 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today awarded Mahapola Higher Education Scholarships at the Temple Trees to the students who have achieved high marks in the 2009/ 2010 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination university entrants.
Addressing the function the President has reminded the students that the country’s future is in their hands.
The President and ministers presented scholarships to 2,500 students who are qualified to pursue education in other institutes of higher education and 10,000 students who have entered the universities.
The programme was organized by the Mahapola Higher Education Trust which is under the Presidential Secretariat.
Mahapola Scholarship Scheme was created by Late Minister of Education Lalith Athulathmudali in 1981 to support the higher education of low income students. Up to now 180,000 scholarships have been provided under the scheme.
The Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake addressing the gathering said that that ragging will never be permitted in universities in the future. Any student involved in ragging will be expelled, the Minister warned.
Ministers Johnston Fernando and Bandula Gunawardena also spoke at the function. Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga was present at the occasion.
